Biography
Martin Epstein's plays have been produced by The Magic Theatre of San Francisco, The Actor's Theatre of Louisville, The Round House in Maryland,The Detroit Repertory, The Odyssey (LA), The New Theater of Brooklyn and manycolleges across the country. Epstein was also a core playwright-director at the Padua Hills Summer Playwright's Festival (LA), where he staged eight of his one-acts. At San Francisco's Magic Theatre, Epstein directed four of his five productions, received a Dramalogue Award for The Man Who Killed The Buddha,and a Rockefeller Grant in Playwriting. Two of his recent full lengths, Vera Similitude and Simplicity were given staged readings by the La Mama Annex and The Bat/Flea theaters. Epstein has published essays introducing the plays of John Steppling, as well as contributed to anthologies on Maria Irene Fornes and the Modern Theatre in Crisis. A number of his one-acts have been published in West Coast Plays, The Best American Plays of 1987, Best Plays from the Humana Festival and Plays from Padua Hills. Epstein was named a TSOA Master Teacher of Musical Theatre and Dramatic Writing and honored for his years of service to the Tisch community.
